Jan Aushadhi medicines for diabetes: how to find yours

Updated 7 October 2026 · 2 min read

Most diabetes prescriptions in India are written for a handful of salts, such as metformin, glimepiride and vildagliptin, alone or combined. For many of them the scheme has a Jan Aushadhi medicine with the same salt, strength and form. Search by the brand your doctor wrote and we show the match, if there is one.

The salts on most diabetes prescriptions

Look at the small print under the brand name on your strip. Common diabetes salts include metformin, glimepiride, gliclazide, vildagliptin, sitagliptin, teneligliptin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin. Many tablets combine two of them, for example glimepiride with metformin.

A combination must match as a whole

If your tablet has two salts, the match has to contain both salts at both strengths. Taking the two separately, or one salt alone, is not the same prescription. We only show a match when every salt and strength is identical and the form is the same.

Sustained-release tablets

"SR" or "XR" after metformin means the tablet releases slowly. A sustained-release tablet is matched only by another sustained-release tablet of the same strength, never by the plain one.

Before you change a brand

  • Ask your doctor. Show them the salt and strength of the Jan Aushadhi medicine.
  • Change one medicine at a time, so you can tell your doctor how you feel on it.
  • Never stop or skip a dose because a strip ran out. Order a few days early; delivery usually takes five to seven days and the date is shown before you pay.

Browse every medicine for this condition under Category, or search for yours.

Questions

Is there a Jan Aushadhi version of metformin?

Yes. Metformin tablets are part of the scheme in several strengths, including sustained-release forms. Search for your brand to see the match at your strength.

Can I replace a combination tablet with two separate tablets?

Not without your doctor. We only show a match when the same salts at the same strengths come in the same form.

Do I need a prescription for diabetes medicines?

Most are prescription medicines. Send the prescription on WhatsApp after ordering and a registered pharmacist checks it before the order is released.
